Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplio in a Day

Mycenae

The citadel of the Bronze Age kingdom that Homer made Agamemnon's, on a ridge between two hills, inside cyclopean walls of blocks so large that later Greeks assumed giants had laid them. You enter through the Lion Gate, the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe: two lionesses flanking a column above the lintel, carved about 1250 BC. Inside are Grave Circle A, where Schliemann dug up the gold now in the National Archaeological Museum, the palace foundations on the summit and a cistern cut down through the rock.

The Treasury of Atreus

A kilometre down the road from the citadel and on the same ticket, this beehive tomb was built about 1300-1250 BC. Its corbelled dome rises about thirteen metres and the lintel over the doorway weighs something over a hundred tonnes, and it remained the largest dome in the world for roughly fifteen hundred years. It is not a treasury in the modern sense but a burial chamber, cut into the hillside and sealed with earth, which is why it survived.

Plenty of day trips drive straight past to the Lion Gate, so the entrance is often quiet even when the citadel is crowded. Build in half an hour for the walk in, the chamber itself and the small side room carved into the rock beside it.

Epidaurus

The sanctuary of Asclepius, the healing god — a hospital, a spa and a temple complex where the sick slept in the abaton hoping for a curative dream. What survives best is the theatre of about 340 BC, seating fourteen thousand, and its acoustics are genuinely extraordinary: a coin dropped on the orchestra floor is audible in the back row. Guides demonstrate it and it works.

Nafplio

A harbour town under the Palamidi fortress, which the Venetians built and the Ottomans took in 1714. Nafplio was the capital of Greece from the resolutions of 1823 and 1827 until 1834, and the first governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was assassinated here on 27 September 1831 by Konstantinos and Georgios Mavromichalis. A small castle, the Bourtzi, sits on an islet in the middle of the bay.

Day trips stop for an hour, which covers lunch and the waterfront and not the Palamidi above the town. That climb is nine hundred and ninety-nine steps, and a separate trip. If you want the fortress and the old town properly, come back and stay a night rather than trying to squeeze it into the afternoon.

The route

Two hours south-west from Athens, crossing the Corinth Canal, which Nero began digging in AD 67 with 6,000 slaves and which was finally cut in 1881-1893. It runs 6.4 km and its walls rise up to 79 m. Mycenae first while it is cool, Nafplio for lunch, Epidaurus in the afternoon, then back.

Epidaurus fits the shape of the day well, since its theatre seats 14,000 and an unamplified voice still carries to the top row, so a short stop earns a lot. Some trips reverse the order and some add Ancient Corinth at €15, which adds a stop and forty-five minutes. That is doable in the long days of summer and a rush in the short ones.

When it is unpleasant

Mycenae is a ridge with no shade and the walk up to the palace is steep. In July at midday it is genuinely hard work. The theatre at Epidaurus is a stone bowl facing the sun, with no cover above the rows, so the afternoon stop bakes too.

Greek authorities do act on heat: during official heatwaves the culture ministry has repeatedly closed open-air sites through the hottest hours, roughly midday to 17:00, with notice given a day or less ahead, so a heatwave can shuffle or shorten a booked trip. The sensible pattern is a spring or autumn day, or in summer the earliest departure you can get, doing Mycenae at opening and leaving the stone bowl for the later hours.

Is it a first-trip day?

Honestly, no. On three or four nights in Athens the city itself and either Delphi or Cape Sounion come first. Delphi gives you the sanctuary of Apollo, where the Pythia gave the oracles, and Sounion gives you the Temple of Poseidon of 444 BC on the cliff.

The Argolid is what you do on a second visit, or on a fifth or sixth night, or if the Bronze Age is specifically what you came for, and Mycenae rewards that interest. Schliemann dug the shaft graves here in 1876, though the best finds now sit in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. It is a very good day.

It is not the first one.

Doing it yourself

A hire car makes this an easy day. The three sites are within an hour of each other and the roads are good, and it is the one arrangement that lets you stop at the Treasury of Atreus and climb the Palamidi fortress above Nafplio. Both of those get cut from group itineraries, which is the real argument for driving.

Mycenae and Epidaurus are state-run sites, so buy tickets online and carry water, since neither ridge nor theatre offers shade. Public transport between the three is possible and slow, with changes at Nafplio, and not something we would attempt in a day. An organised coach handles the driving and the timings, but you trade away the fortress, the tomb and any control over how long you stay.
