The sequence
The Museum of Greek Culture runs from the Neolithic through the classical and Byzantine periods, into the Ottoman centuries and out the other side to the War of Independence and the founding of the modern state. Almost every other museum in Athens takes one slice of that and stops; the Benaki's argument is that the slices belong together, and the building is arranged to make you walk the join.
The rooms people remember
Two complete carved and painted wooden reception rooms from eighteenth-century mansions in Kozani, installed whole. Early Christian and Byzantine icons and metalwork. The regional folk costume, which is the best collection of its kind in Greece.
And Byron's possessions and the relics of the independence war, which for Greek visitors are the point of the museum.
Where it came from
Antonis Benakis, a cotton merchant's son from the Greek community of Alexandria, collected for decades and in 1930 gave the collection and the family house to the Greek state. The house being the museum is not incidental — the rooms are domestic scale and the objects sit in them as furnishing rather than as display.

Benaki Museum of Islamic Art, Kerameikos
In two restored neoclassical houses on the edge of the Kerameikos site, holding one of the more important collections of Islamic art in Europe, and with a roof terrace looking over the ancient cemetery. Practical if you are already at Kerameikos.
Pireos 138
The large modern annexe on Pireos Street, used for temporary exhibitions, contemporary art, photography and design, with its own programme and its own opening pattern. It is a different sort of visit entirely.
Ghika Gallery and the Toy Museum
The Ghika Gallery on Kriezotou preserves the painter Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika's own studio flat; the Toy Museum is out at Palaio Faliro. Both are small, both are separate tickets, and both are for a second or third visit to Athens rather than a first.
